Mid-twentieth-century development moved population eastward from Los Angeles into the county's valleys and foothill areas. Moorpark emerged as part of that growth, incorporating as a city on July 1, 1983.
Today Moorpark has a population of 36,284 according to the 2020 census. The city's growth reflects Ventura County's evolution from agricultural region to suburban community, yet the area maintains what regional planners call a country feel, with open space, hills, and access to outdoor recreation despite proximity to the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Schools, parks, and family services have expanded with the population.
